Plasma Medicine

Plasma Medicine, a interdisciplinary research field that gained strong international attention in the last decade, attracted the attention of our researchers in a strong collaboration with biochemists, medical doctors and chemists. The main goal of our research is the develop plasma experimental set-ups for medical-relevant materials processing and for benefic direct interaction with living tissue. Thus, plasma processing of biomaterials can increase the bio and hemocompatibility, can deposit supports matrices for pharmaceutical products, biosensors for diagnostic, or may improve materials stability at interface with human cells or tissues. Also, by direct action, the plasma can be used in the treatment of skin diseases and wounds. In this sense our main aims are the development, diagnosis and testing of non-thermal plasma jets.

Main directions/results

  1. Design and development of plasma sources working at atmospheric pressure in different gases and geometries (DBD based plasma in plan-plan geometry or jet etc).
  2. Fundamental plasma phenomena at atmospheric pressure: electrical diagnosis, optical diagnosis, high speed imaging.
  3. Improvement of polymeric surfaces functionality by plasma treatments for subsequent immobilization of bio-active molecules (albumin, fibrinogen, IgG and drugs), stimulating certain physiological and biochemical processes at interface with living tissues.
  4. Development of plasma polymerization reactors to obtain target polymeric materials (e.g. smart polymers), designed to detect changes in the physiological environment such as temperature, density of negative ions, protein denaturation.
  5. Development of theoretical model and analysis method for the thermodynamic parameters at the interface between physiological environment-suture fibers (cylindrical surfaces).
  6. Development of non-thermal plasmas sources for direct treatment of living tissue and cells in culture media.
