The plasma functionalization techniques proposed by the present project are an alternative to the common wet-chemistry functionalization method using self assembled monolayer depositions of organothiol or organosilane molecules on nanoprobe surfaces. The potential of plasma polymer functionalization of nanoprobe surfaces is much less explored. The novelty of the method proposed here consists of using the polymer graft from approach by plasma activation of nanoprobe surface fallowed by chemical vapor deposition of monomer molecules. The project activity is mainly focused on plasma functionalization of commercially available silicon and silicon nitride AFM probes, fact that allows for direct measurements of interaction forces of the functionalized probes with designated target surfaces. Implementation of the present project should lead to building of an expertise in plasma functionalization of nanoprobes of our laboratory with openings for technology transfer to industry. The project will give a group of young researchers the opportunity to start and develop a carrier in the interdisciplinary field of nanobiotechnology.

PLASMA FUNCTIONALIZATION OF NANOSCOPIC PROBES

This project is funded under the National CDI Plan 2007 - 2013 UEFISCDI by the grant 267/2011 .

The program “IDEAS” aims the achievement of scientific and technological results at European level, in order to increase the visibility and international recognition of Romanian research.

It supports and promotes fundamental, interdisciplinary and/or exploratory scientific research in Romania.

The program addresses researchers with proven quality activity and internationally recognized scientific publications, including those working abroad and willing to conduct research of high scientific level in institutions in Romania.
