Piatra Neamt has all the advantages offered by a kind and unique nature. The area around Piatra Neamt is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Romania. The oldest traces of human civilization in the present territory date back to the higher Paleolithic, about 100,000 years BCE. The Cucuteni culture, whose development lasted approximately one thousand years (ca. 3600-2600 BCE) was attested in the territory of Neamt county by a remarkable number of settlements (approx. 150), archaeological diggings unearthing important museum collections of Aeneolithic artifacts. Archaeologists have also discovered objects here dating back to the Neolithic Period and the Bronze Age.

The Dacian Fortress of Batca Doamnei represents the oldest historic monument of Piatra Neamt City. The fortress is located on a peak of the south-eastern side of the city, across Doamna (Lady) neighborhood and hermitage. A few traces of the Dacian settlement are situated on the peak of a spur at over 450 meters high. Although they are only the ruins of over 2,000 years old fortifications, a hiking to the “fortress” is accessible to any tourist and is worth to take at least for the landscapes that can be admired from the top of the hill. It’s worth to take a look from above, from atop Batca Doamnei, where a wonderful view opens up: the Piatra Neamt City and Reservoir, Bistrita Monastery and magnificent mountain peaks all around, and imagine what life was like there during Burebista and Decebalus reigns.

The Bicaz Canyon was dug by the waters of Bicaz River and it serves as a passageway between the Romanian provinces of Moldova and Transylvania, the former border between Romania and the Kingdom of Hungary. It is a noted location to see the wallcreeper, an uncommon cliff-dwelling bird. The road along the 8 kilometers of ravines, often in serpentines with rock on one side and a sheer drop on the other is one of the most spectacular drives in the country. It is one of the main rock climbing sites in Romania.
